Where I live
Alphen aan den Rijn

I live in Alphen aan den Rijn, a town with approximately 108.000 inhabitants in the province of Zuid-Holland and centrally located in the so-called "Green Heart" area between the major cities of Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht in the western part of The Netherlands. As winner of the national Entente Florale Competition my hometown was declared the Greenest City in The Netherlands in 2001. A Gold Medal has been awarded to Alphen aan den Rijn in the prestigious European Entente Florale Competition 2002.

Some of the photos on these pages are also posted in a larger format (900x600 pixels) on my Zegerplas webpage.

Visit Alphens.nl or the official Municipal Website for more information about Alphen aan den Rijn (in the Dutch language).

The track around the lake leads hikers, cyclists and joggers along picturesque sceneries like here where the small river Aar flows into the Zegerplas.

Not an unusual sight on a quiet summer evening just before sunset, a hot air balloon (PH-FCB, Cameron A-415, c/n 10843) searching for a landing spot (June 17, 2006).

The area around the Zegerplas is also used on a regular basis as a boarding area for sight seeing flights with hot air balloons. Here an Ultramagic M-130 with registration PH-WBT (c/n 130/11, 1997) seen from my living room just after lift off (June 2001).

Sometimes it can even be quite busy in the air above and around the Zegerplas when several balloons take off within a short time frame (June 2008).

Thanks to our mild winters and the water depth of the lake, ice on the Zegerplas is a very rare phenomenon. But here some patches of ice on the lake on a day that spring should have been in the air already, on the 13th of March, 2006.

But two months later we enjoyed the view of the trees blossoming in May (2006).

Also the winter 2006-2007 was a very mild one with only a couple of days with (wet) snow around the 7th of February 2007.

Ten weeks later a record was set on Sunday the 15th of April 2007 when the maximum temperature reached 28.9°C, the highest temperature ever recorded during the month of April at the De Bilt weather observatory of the KNMI (Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute).

With spring in the air the border of the Zegerplas is an attractive place for the students from a nearby secondary school to take a break (March 2002).
