The Republic of Costa Rica, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean between Nicaragua and Panama, is the Central American success story. It has a reputation for being an oasis of calm in a turbulent area. The country's natural attractions, wildlife and a climate that encourages slothfulness in all species draw tourists from all over the world. Successive governments have made a real effort to preserve the country's image as an ecotourism heaven, making Costa Rica one of the best places to experience the tropics naturally and with minimal impact.

Our first destination was a radio relay station at an elevation of 2640 meter on a summit approximately 1 kilometer north-east of the crater of the Poás Volcano in the Poás National Park, approximately 45 kilometers north of San José.

Since the Volcan Poás National Park is one of the most visited protected areas in the country it took some time in the queue before we could enter the park.

On our way to the summit we passed the Poás Volcano (Spanish: Volcán Poás), an active stratovolcano. The volcano has had a long history of eruptions. In January 1910, the volcano spewed out 640,000 tons of ash, and in the period of 1952-1954, it bombarded nearby areas with ash and rocks.

This is as close as we could get to the crater. Unfortunately we couldn't see the lagoon deep inside the crater because of the sulphurous gases. Since 1955 the Poás Volcano has maintained a low profile, but two years after our visit, the park was closed because of dangerous sulphurous gas emissions.
