The Republic of El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, is bordered by Guatemala in the northwest and Honduras in the northeast. The country has a population of 6.2 million people, with an annual growth rate of 2.3 percent. 94 percent of the population is mestizo (a mixture of Indian and Spanish) while 5 percent of the population is native Indian.
